What are my options if my kids want to try spikes for the track meets?

You do not need to buy spikes for the meet. Many kids run with their regular running shoes. However, here are some options if your kid would like to try spikes:

  1. MHSA loaners: We have a bunch of loaners for kids to try and use during this season. Some kids have already taken some spikes and there are many other left and available for the taking. Please come ask any coaches for the loaner spikes. It's not guaranteed that your athlete will have spikes their size available though.

  2. There are New Balance loaners at the Denver Twilight Series: Since New Balance sponsors the DTS meet, they also bring some NB loaner spikes that your kids can try and return right after their race. It's not guaranteed that your athlete will have spikes their size available though.

  3. Affordable Options at Amazon: Click here

  4. If you decide to go the fancy/pro route: I believe the best spikes are New Balance, Nike and Adidas. These have a carbon plate technology that help increase the energy return with every stride. There are spikes specifically designed for the 100-200 meters, and some that are designed for a variety of distances. Some options:

    • Nike Clearance Store (Aurora): they often have pro spikes that are heavily discounted

    • Running Warehouse (wide variety of prices)
